Bridging the Gap Between Influencers and Academic Integrity
As I prepare to introduce the concept of MLA citations to my college students, I’m struck by the stark contrast in how this generation interacts with content.
Think about it: most of the information they consume—whether it’s from an influencer’s post, a rap lyric, or a viral meme—is rarely attributed. It’s reshared, remixed, and reimagined without a thought of where it came from. This is the world they know—fast-moving, collaborative, but often without a nod to the original source.
Now, enter the world of academic writing. Here, every influence, every contribution, must be properly acknowledged. It’s about giving credit where it’s due, documenting sources, and honoring intellectual property.
Merging these two worlds is going to lead to some interesting conversations. How do we balance the fluidity of content creation today with the rigor of academic integrity? How can we help students appreciate the value of citing while respecting the remix culture they’re so accustomed to?
I’m excited to see where these discussions take us. After all, learning to navigate both worlds will only empower them more!
