One of the most difficult tasks of a leader is allowing those we lead to fail. Controlled Failure: It seems like a ridiculous things to say right? But think about what happens when a leader swoops in and takes over. Any sense of accomplishment with the success is lost, much of the journey to get there is forgotten, and the confidence of the employee is damaged. You can sometimes see it, but it is definitely there below the surface.
Failure is ok. Certainly there are places you don’t want any risk like air traffic controllers, microwave seal manufacturers, and medication production. But in business most “controlled failures” can be the best teachers of our careers.
What is a controlled failure. When we as leaders give the bookends of acceptable risk to our employees (how to mitigate issues, how much to invest before pulling the plug, how to evaluate the KPIs before a decision must be taken) when give them the reigns. That moment is so freeing, it shows trust, confidence and expectation. In my career I have never regretting letting go, only holding on too tight.
