“How much theory is too much?”

This is the question I’ve been wrestling with as I design my college classes.

On one hand, theory provides the foundation. It’s the “why” behind everything we do—it helps students see the bigger picture. But too much of it can take the air out of the room, leaving students disengaged and overwhelmed.

On the other hand, cases and real-world examples bring the room back to life. They challenge preconceived ideas, spark debates, and make the abstract feel practical. Students get to test theories, see them play out, and—most importantly—build new ones.

So, here’s the balance I’m striving for:

Enough theory to anchor their understanding.

Enough discussion and real-world examples to ignite it.

This isn’t about “teaching” in the traditional sense—it’s about creating value and making my students stronger by the time they leave my course than when they entered.

I’m finding my way, one class at a time.
